About

Why Cirque exists

Cirque shows skiers where and when natural snow has been dependable, and how that is changing, from weather records rather than resort marketing.

What Cirque is for

A changing climate shows up first in the snow, and snow is the thing a ski trip depends on. Cirque turns thirty winters of weather records into a plain answer for any resort and any fortnight: how often there has been enough natural snow to ski. Beside it sits the long record: snow measured by hand at Swiss weather stations since the 1930s, and snow modelled at every resort since 1950, so you can see how winters have changed for yourself rather than take anyone’s word for it.

How we keep it honest

Every figure is either measured or modelled, and the site says which. The model is checked against snow stations in the Alps and North America, and where it falls short, the Method page says so. Modelled change is shown as an upper estimate, because when we tested it against the stations it overstated the loss they measured. Rankings come only from the data.

Who runs it

Cirque is run by Methodis Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 16830157), registered office Suite A, James Carter Road, Mildenhall, Bury St Edmunds, IP28 7DE.

Snow is modelled from thirty winters of ERA5 weather data, natural snow only. It ignores snowmaking, grooming and wind, so use it to compare places, dates and heights, not as a guarantee. Always check local avalanche bulletins before going off-piste.
